Blowfish Set Record in Win
COLUMBIA - Stew Brase (Charleston Southern, 2-2) threw a shutout in his seven innings of work, and Nick Orvin, Chase Vergason, and Ryan McCormick reached base four times as the Columbia Blowfish (6-9) rolled over the Fayetteville Swampdogs (7-8) 12-0 Monday night at Capital City Stadium. The margin of victory was the largest ever at home for the Blowfish. It was also their biggest win since a 15-1 victory at Gastonia on July 26, 2007. Brase did not allow a run off six hits in seven innings of work. He also struck out four to earn his team-leading second win. Nick Cudney (Belmont Abbey, 0-2) had a rough night in his second loss, giving up six runs (five earned) off eight hits and two hit batsmen in five innings. The Blowfish started the scoring in the first. Chase Vergason (Florida Atlantic) was pegged by Cudney. Branfy Arias (Tusculum) then singled to right and an errant throw by outfielder Jordan Williams (Kentucky) allowed Vergason and Arias to advance to third and second, respectively. Brison Celek (South Carolina) brought Vergason home with an RBI groundout to put Columbia up 1-0. The Blowfish put another pair across in the third. Nick Orvin (Citadel) walked and stole second, then scored off Vergason's RBI double. Vergason came around himself two batters later, scoring off Celek's single to give Columbia a 3-0 advantage. Columbia put the game away with three in the fifth. Arias led off with a double, moved to third on Celek's single, then scored on David Greene's (Citadel) RBI double. Three at-bats after that, Dadynoel Lorenzo (Shorter) scored Celek and Greene with a base knock to give the Blowfish a 6-0 lead. But Columbia was only half-finished. With the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth, Arias hit a sacrifice fly to plate Ryan McCormick (Millersville) and advance Orvin to third. Vergason then stole second, and a throwing error by catcher Joe Witkowski (St. John's) allowed Orvin to come home to make it 8-0. Another three came across in the seventh. With the bases loaded again and one out, Orvin walked to bring in Nick Abrahamson (VCU) and Fayetteville reliever Andy Lowe (Heidelberg) hit Vergason with a pitch to bring home Bryan Hill (Union). Arias then grounded out to score McCormick to put the Blowfish ahead 11-0. The final run came across in the eighth when Lorenzo doubled to score Greene to make it the final 12-0 margin. NOTES: McCormick had two base hits. He now has four in two games, after getting only one in his first nine... Brase almost lost the shutout in the first inning. With one out and runners on the corners, Fayetteville's Corey LeVier tried to steal second, but was thrown out by Abrahamson. On the throw, Jay Carlson broke home from third, but shortstop Dadynoel Lorenzo quickly fired home and Abrahamson applied the tag to end the inning... Fayetteville had two runners on for different five innings, but came away empty every time. Blowfish return home on Tuesday to take on the Morehead City Marlins at 7:05 pm... It will be "Two For Tuesday." Fans can get two hot dogs and two sodas for just $5.
