Rain Ends Blowfish Evening Early
COLUMBIA - The Blowfish took the lead in the third inning and had runners on again in the fourth, but then the skies opened up and the sudden downpour drenched both the field and any chance of continuing on Wednesday night. The rainout spoiled an excellent start by Blowfish pitcher Derrick Smith (Erskine), who gave up no runs on only two hits in four innings. The lone Columbia run came after Shawn Glover (Erskine) reached on Wilmington third baseman Yogi Gunther's (Palm Beach Atlantic) throwing error, stole second, and came around to score on a Dadynoel Lorenzo (Georgia Perimeter) RBI single to give the Blowfish a 1-0 lead. Columbia had a chance to add to its lead in the fourth. Bryan Hill (Union) doubled to start off the inning, then moved to third on a base hit by Brison Celek (South Carolina). But then skies opened up, and a hard rain soaked the field before the tarp could be pulled. The game will be continued on Wilmington's next trip to Columbia on June 18th at 5:05 pm. The previously scheduled second game will now be seven innings and played 30 minutes after the first game concludes. NOTES: It was the first rainout for Columbia in 2010... Derrick Smith has unofficially struck out nine in six innings this season... The Blowfish travel to Gastonia Thursday night to take on the Grizzlies... They return home to take on the Florence Red Wolves for the fourth time in seven games on Friday night at 7:05 pm.... All fans will be entered into a drawing to win tickets to an Atlanta Braves game.
